What a fantastic tribute to Sir Bobby Robson. Sunday night emphasised everything that was good about our city and this club. It emphasised how deeply the club and individuals who have served our club are held in high esteem by not just supporters but by the Geordie nation.
It emhasised how owner’s come and go (and we all know which owner we’d like to go now) but the glue that holds the club together remains strong – the supporters. Sunday was about Sir Bobby Robson, fan and inspiration, it is a tribute to his roots that he never left them.
Our city and region made Sir Bobby what he was and he never, ever forgot that. The blood, the strength of character and the drive to succeed display the very best of our region and Sir Bobby had them in spades.
Sir Bobby led the way for many and is an inspiration to many not just through his continuing battle against cancer, which incidentally, he never allowed to define him as a person, but through his honesty, his forthright style and his loyalty to ‘his people’.
It was a fitting tribute to a powerful image of what is good about our region.
It sent out a powerful message that Sir Bobby would have been proud of. That we stand by our own, we embrace change because its in our DNA and we adapt to the realities of the world, not become defined by them.
Sir Bobby isn’t a victim of cancer, he is a man of steel who happens to have cancer.
He has had such a powerful impact for the good of our region and more importantly the city of Newcastle we can all learn from this experience.
It is truly humbling.
