Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill is said to be interested in Newcastle transfer target Andreas Granqvist. Newcastle were already expected to face a fight for the signing of Genoa’s Granqvist in the form of Liverpool. But it has now been reported that Sunderland are also interested in the 6 ft 3 Serie A defender, after Martin O’Neill was spotted watching him play in Sweden’s 4-2 win against England last week. Sky Tyne and Wear have reported that interest from both North East clubs is “quite serious” and that a source close to the player said: “If the right offer came in he would move back to England.” Granqvist has 27 caps for Sweden, and has made 28 appearances since joining Genoa in the summer of 2011. He’s not unknown to the Premier League, having had a spell at Wigan. He has two and a half years left on his contract with the Italian club, and it’s thought that the 27-year-old would go for a fee of £4.5m in the upcoming January transfer window. Many would debate whether Ashley would splash the cash on a defender who’s going to turn 28 in April. Do you think he would? Would you like to see Granqvist on Tyneside? Let us know your thoughts?
