The Ibrox Stadium could be renamed the Sports Direct Arena as Mike Ashley is thought to be in talks over the naming rights for Rangers’ iconic ground. The Newcastle owner is expanding his business in Scotland and wants to rename the famous Ibrox stadium as part of promotion and branding for his Sports Direct retail group. If the deal was to go ahead, it is one which is certain to anger Rangers’ fans, despite their financial situation. This isn’t the first time that we have seen a ‘Sports Direct Arena’ in the UK. As Newcastle fans know all too well, Mike Ashley renamed St. James’ Park the very same name just over a year ago, until Wonga bought the naming rights and renamed it St. James’ Park once more. The deal is likely to cause a similar reaction to the one that happened at Newcastle; angry fans who will refuse to accept that their ground is called anything else. What do you think about Ashley’s latest proposed move? Let us know your thoughts?
